In “The Story Behind ‘In Broad Daylight,'” Author Harry MacLean reveals the details of how he uncovered what actually happened in the vigilante killing of Ken Rex McElroy in Skidmore, Missouri, in 1981, as told in “In Broad Daylight.” Standing a few feet from where the killers opened fire on Ken Rex McElroy more than three decade ago, Harry N. MacLean explains how he came to write his Edgar Award-winning book. MacLean had doors slammed in his face, guns pulled on him, and was bitten by a dog. Eventually, he won over the closed community of Skidmore, Mo. The inhabitants shared with him the reign of terror Ken Rex McElroy inflicted for twenty years in Northwest Missouri, and information about his murder on the main street of Skidmore in 1981. Despite 45 witnesses, the case remains unsolved. MacLean tells the story in his book “In Broad Daylight,” first published in 1988. “The Story Behind ‘In Broad Daylight’” brings the book up to date and includes several previously unpublished pictures. It also answers many questions about the killing itself, such as who was involved, and what has become of them. The author discusses the nature of the moral consequences of the killing for the town and those involved in the killing. MacLean describes the breakthrough events when key characters agreed to speak with him, and he realized he would finally get the story.

This is a needed companion to the In Broad Daylight book as it gives readers a good perspective on what it takes to write a true-crime book. It is a daunting task, to be sure, but writing one literally on the heels of the original incident, when emotions are still running high and the participants and witness are still dealing with the immediate aftermath is even more difficult.

Author MacLean did a wonderful job in conveying his own concerns, fears, and enthusiasm for such a project, and those all-to-present doubts many writers have when taking on a project of this magnitude. Having been a professional transcriptionist for many years, I commend him for sitting down to transcribe those interviews after they occurred. That action, alone, required hours upon hours and a true commitment.

There were a couple of spots in the book where the author shifted back and forth between past and present-day and I found myself having to reread a paragraph to reorient myself. It did not take away from the overall enjoyment of the book. This technique of weaving past and present throughout a manuscript is not an easy thing to do and I commend him on making the attempt.

While Mr. MacLean didn't start out life as a writer, he seems to have found a new calling well-suited to him. Readers would do well to click the "follow" link on his Amazon author's page to keep up with his latest releases. Where are your literary travels taking you next, Mr. MacLean?

On a side note: The Town of Skidmore residents, particularly the Community Betterment Committee, are focused on revitalizing their town, as well they should. Skidmore has played a significant role in the overall history of the county, long before Ken Rex McElroy cast a long shadow. There is much in Skidmore's history to take pride in. A new generation is hard at work and I hope and pray they are successful in their efforts. Skidmore has many wonderful residents. I travel into the area on genealogy projects and while doing historical research on different subjects, and to attend the occasional community dinner. I have always been made to feel welcome. I am eager to see the walking trails they are working toward to become a reality, and I hope to get over to Good Time Charlie's for one of those massive tenderloins. I hope that others will see the opportunities that exist for new business startups there.

Years later it is still hard to believe the facts of the case of Ken McElory and his reign of terror in Skidmore, MIssouri. It is also hard to believe how Harry MacLean was able to get the people involved to tell the story when law enforcement struck out. Stamina is all I can figure out. It took years of patient, persistent doggedness to get the story. Harry MacLean's narative of digging out the story is as compelling as the story itself.
This is a very interesting look at how Mr. MacLean was able to write the book, In Broad Daylight, in the first place. The story behind the story writing is informative and frankly, kind of scary. I think an author who wades right in to the middle of a crime like this, in a town like this, has some serious guts. This could have gone so wrong for Harry, even 30 years after. Finding one of Ken McElroy's son's to go along on this trip added another very special element.
I couldn't finish it. It jumps back and forth so much I couldn't keep up. You shouldn't have to 'work' to read a book.
I first read In Broad Daylight some two decades ago. A complete page turner, approaching the likes of In Cold Blood. Yet, the story of this crime is fascinating, as it was witnessed by as many as forty people; that is, the assassination of the long time town bully in a small Missouri community on the town's main street in the middle of the day. Notwithstanding the numerous potential witnesses to this crime, the entire community adopted the omertà, or code of silence, as to what happened that day. As I read the book itself, I found myself frequently wondering how the author was able to gather facts to generate a true crime work that turned into a best seller.
We now with "The Story Behind In Broad Daylight" discover the time. effort and imagination the author expended, the majority of it living within the community and finally achieving a level of comfort and trust with many in the town from whom his information is gleaned. In its own way, the telling of how he was able to do it is as compelling as the book itself. But, if you have not yet enjoyed the book, get a copy of it and this story behind it at the same time, read the book first and follow on with this fine piece about how the author broke, or at least substantially loosened the code of silence which exists yet to this day. If you've already read the book itself, it's not likely you have forgotten it, and the story behind it lends a fine new perspective.
The Story Behind In Broad Daylight is a gripping and informative look at what it took for Harry MacLean to bring the original true story to light. I was captivated by Harry's ability to quietly become one within the community. Like most small, somewhat isolated, rural communities there's an unwritten code against outsiders. Skidmore and the area surrounding it is no different. Being "adopted" by the Goslee family and living in their home off and on while researching his topic did make things easier for MacLean. I tend to believe in kismet, so for me, it was MacLean's destiny to retell this dark story. Victims and killers alike do seem to call from beyond the grave, whispering a request for their stories to be told. It has to be fulfilling for MacLean to know not only did he write an Edgar Award winning book originally, he has now delivered a thoughtfully written behind-the-scenes look at his fortunate journey. This book is a quick read, one which gives the reader even better insight into the people who were terrorized by McElroy for far too many years. Be warned though. You'll find yourself rereading In Broad Daylight quickly after as The Story Behind leaves you wanting more. I quite fancy MacLean's writing and hope he will continue to find fascinating stories to share. If only we could have met in that time and place. Another story behind the story? Perhaps.
